We are in the “palliative care” stage of civilization. Much like most people will avoid dealing with their own mortality, I feel like the climate debate is expending too much energy in the wrong direction, like we can either reverse or manage it, the ultimate hubris. I know palliative care doctors, and I try to model my outlook to resemble theirs. We need to muster as much compassion as possible for each other.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t endorse “giving up”. But I want to make sure people have the proper perspective when they take action on the climate front, whatever action they choose. Go car-free, go vegan, demand nations take action, engage in civil disobediance against big oil, etc. All these things better serve our conscience than avert inevitable catastrophe. There is benefit on an individual level whenever, for example, we toss something into the recycle bin than into the rubbish bin. But our kids are still going to face a worse outlook than we will.

Much damage has already been done, and the main thrust of that damage has yet to be seen. That is why we MUST take action now. A top goal should be the quick abandonment of fossil fuel.

However, this goal requires social support. For one example, battery-operated mass transit - this takes community investment. Another example would be large-scale investment in solar and wind power - and only large-scale sources of capital can undertake such investments.

Yes, we as individuals can take some small-scale initiatives. I, for one, plan to ditch my gasoline operated lawnmower, and someday when I can find the funds, put up some solar panels.

Yes, these kinds of things will not save the world. We need to directly address the sources of the problem - and THE primary sources would be the oil and gas companies. No, I am not calling for sabotage - the best action to take would be to push for institutional financial divestment from these corporations. Ironically, divestment will likely be a good financial move, as these companies (such as Exxon-Mobile) become less and less viable as enterprises.
