" La tolérance est la conséquence nécessaire de la conscience que nous avons d'être faillibles. L'erreur est humaine, et nous faisons tous sans cesse des fautes. Pardonnons-nous réciproquement nos bêtises. C'est la première loi de la nature. "

Recursive intolerance eats itself. Excursive intolerance may have uses, but they are few and should be surrounded by a knowledge of how to overcome the urge to kill whatever does not suit one's fancy. That, as we see today, is no basis for civilization.

forgiveness can be a way of "living together", but murder must be excluded to do civilization

Who plays God? Who defines what constitutes either the tolerant or the intolerant? Who shouts over others? Who participates in honest, civil discourse? Essentially we have to use the same standard for what constitutes an exception to free speech, or how pornography is defined. In the case of free speech, it is limited by "fire in the theater", or that speech (or impediment thereof) that could get people killed; and pornography becomes what is acceptable by the community (yet limited by those who will not tolerate the inclusion of children, or of those forced to it in contrast to their own volition). As one Supreme Court Justice said "I know it when I see it". Same with what is tolerant and intolerant, I suppose; but again, will my standards be consistent with the SCOTUS interpretation (based on their own eyes) ? Uncomfortable situation.
