I apologise. I support academic research with taxpayer dollars. DARPA, colleges, universities, non-profits - all the entities that have turned into dog-eat-dog hyper-competitive pit fights for funding. I know what it's like to be driven by passion and obsession over the careful repetitive step-by-step process of discovery. If I had the means I'd definitely contribute.

Even when I was a young man in college I could see the dead eyes in the up-and-coming academics and the bitter hardness in the faces of the tenured. So much discovery over the last 50+ decades ended up trapped in now long destroyed three ring binders collecting dust in some corporate cubical. The internet helped a little but without funding it's all just text and simulation!

..there's nothing quite like working at a US College or University where - really really - if one does not score a grant, or get something published in a prestigious academic journal, one can easily lose ones job at those edifice's...that's why I stopped teaching EuroHist at a local community college.

Teaching wasn't enough to keep ones teaching job, one also had to be published every year or get awarded a grant.

And yes, all the high end Universities and Colleges do this. I hate the attitude.
