People need to stop thinking that they'd own autonomous cars. You rent them, they come, they drive you around, and they continue after dropping you off. Transportation as a service.

Current average utilisation of a car is 3-4%. With autonomous vehicles, you can get that number to roughly 35% (you always need buffer for peak times), which is an 8x reduction. Or in other words: 1/8th of the cars.

For completeness, here is how you arrive at 3-4%:

    • Average distance travelled by car in Germany: 13602km per year
    • Average speed: 60km/h
    • 13600 / 60 == 227 hours per year when the car is in motion
    • A year has 8760 hours (365 * 24)
    • 227 hours out of 8760 equals 2.6% (227*100 / 8760)

In other words, the 3-4% were already generous. Cars spend 96% of their time parked.

Be honnest and say a "day" is 12h long, that is about 6% use / 94% park ... wrong enough :)
